The columns of this scroll from the Flower Garland Sutra (Skt. Buddhâvataṃsaka-sūtra; Ch. Huayan jing; J. Kegon kyō) are indicated with gold-ink margins, which appear on indigo-dyed paper that has faded to a gray-blue shade. Scattered flecks of gold and silver foil adorn the writing surface. It is called one of the “Senpukuji sutras” because it is stamped with the seal of Senpukuji Temple. The paper has been made using three layers; the layers on the front and back incorporate fibers from refurbished indigo-dyed paper.
