The Wisdom King Daiitoku Myōō (Skt. Yamāntaka) sits astride a water buffalo. This deity is believed to be an emanation of Amida Buddha (Skt. Amitābha), who presides over the Pure Land (Skt. Sukhāvatī). The unusual features of this painting—the Five-Element Pagoda (gorintō) in the foreground, and the background painted in gold, red, and blue—are thought to reflect Shingon adaptations of Pure Land faith for an esoteric Buddhist context.
