This is a form of Fudō (Skt. Ācala) that developed during the mid-Heian period (794-1185) and became standard from that time onward. With the inclusion of the two childlike attendants and Kurikara Ryūken (a dragon entwined around a sword), this work is compositionally similar to the representative painting of this type, Ao Fudō (Blue Fudō), located at Shōren-in Temple in Kyoto Prefecture.
