The set of the entire Buddhist canon (issaikyō) that was sponsored by Fujiwara no Kiyohira (1056–1128), the patriarch of the Ōshū Fujiwara clan, is referred to as the “Chūsonji Temple Sutras.” On paper dyed a deep blue, the sutra has been transcribed in alternating lines of silver and gold within silver margins. Hiraizaumi was the capital of the Ōshū Fujiwara in the Tohoku region, and this sutra is an invaluable example of the culture that flourished there.
