This is a reproduction of the eaves for the Nara-period shrine that held the Taima Mandara, which is installed in the main hall of Taima-dera Temple in Nara. Thin sheets of metal are embedded in lacquer in the heidatsu technique, which was popular during the Nara period. The replica features motifs of so-called karahana (literally Chinese flowers) and other designs. Kitamura Daitsū, the lacquer artisan from Nara who produced this item, had worked on conserving the shrine.
