This standing image of Amida Nyorai (Skt. Amitābha) forms the raigō’in with the thumb and index finger of each hand. It is the mudrā that Amida Nyorai makes when appearing in this world to guide the departed to the Pure Land paradise. In its gentle expression, in the folds of its robes carved only subtly and at regular intervals, and in its torso characterized by a slight chest, this statue exemplifies the style established by the master sculptor Jōchō (d. 1057) in the 11th century.
