Kasuga Taisha Shrine and its environs appear in the upper part of this painting, and the major buildings and pagodas of Kōfukuji Temple appear in the foreground. Above the shrine buildings, the Kasuga deities appear in their Buddhist forms. The combination of these two sacred sites into a single painting reflects the religious paradigm of combinatory Buddhist and Shinto faith (shinbutsu shūgō).
