The Lotus Sutra (Skt. Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra; Ch. Fahua jing; J. Hoke kyō) expounds that, through various means, anyone can achieve Buddhahood. With the flourishing of sutra copying practices during the Heian period (794–1185) alongside the spread of Pure Land teachings on rebirth in the Pure Land paradise, lavish adornments for sutra scrolls evoking the lofty ornament of the Pure Land became popular as well. The blank spaces of this sutra have been decorated with painted butterflies, birds, musical instruments, and other motifs.
