This copy of the Great Wisdom Sutra was produced at the government scriptorium around the year 772 (Hoki 3). It is known as the “Gyoyo sutra” because the calligraphy has been attributed to the famous calligrapher Asano no Uokai, the characters of whose name can also be read Giyo. The calligraphy features boldly executed characters with an ample sense of volume that are representative of sutras copied in the later stages of the Nara period.
