This is a section from the Meigetsuki, “The Bright Moon Diary,” kept by the celebrated poet Fujiwara no Sadaie (1162–1241), also known as Teika. It is a portion from the entry for the twenty-second day of the fourth month of Ken’nin 1 (1201) describing a festive banquet that involved outings on three boats: one for music, one for Japanese-style poetry, and one for Chinese-style poetry.
