This desk was employed within the hall of a Buddhist temple. It has wooden rails attached to the bottom of its vertical legs. The vermilion lacquer notation on the underside of the abletopreveals that it was produced in the third year of the Meiōera (1494). As the tabletop itself is rathersmall, the table could be used as a side table setnext to the priest's seat (Jpn. raiban) during a service.
