This is one scroll from a complete set of the Buddhist canon (issaikyō), known as the Sutras of the First Day of the Fifth Month. These sutras were commissioned by Empress Kōmyō on behalf of her late parents. The documents of the Shōsō-in at Tōdai-ji temple make clear that the sutra was copied by Ōmi no Kanayumi in the 14th year of the Tenpyō era.
