This is an original block used to print Buddhist scriptures; the mirror-image characters were carvedin relief into the woodblock. Ink was applied to the blocks and characters were pressed onto sheets of paper. The term Kasuga edition refers to Buddhist scripture that was printed at Kōfuku-ji temple between the Heian and Edo periods. This block contains the first lines of the ninth fascicle of the Hokke gensan.
