The raiban is rectangular seat for the chief priest leading a Buddhist ceremonial assembly. Normally a straw tatami mat would be placed atop the raiban. This item is one of the box-shaped types, on whose side surfaces have been rendered only vertical latticework (taterenji) in a very plain and simple style. This item serves as a standard by which to judge others since the ink inscription on the reverse provides the date of its production.
