These treasures were excavated at the site of the pagoda at Ryōanji, a temple mentioned in the Later Chronicles of Japan (Nihon kōki; 840). They are thought to be chindangu : objects buried before erecting a building to pacify the spirits living in the ground. The Ryūheieihō coins were first minted in 796 (Enryaku 15), offering a clue as to when the pagoda was constructed.
