The title of this scripture has been translated as the Light Mantra of the Consecration of the Infallible Net of Vairocana. The scroll is from the project, sponsored by Fujiwara no Kiyohira, to copy the entire Buddhist canon. The complete set of thousands of scriptures, dedicated between the years 1117 and 1119 (Eikyū 5 to Gen'ei 2), is known as the Chūsonji kyō (the sutras of the Chūson-ji temple). An image of Shakyamuni, the historical Buddha, preaching has been rendered in gold and silver ink on the frontispiece. The text of the sutra has also been written in alternating lines of gold and silver ink.
