The Mandala of the Two Worlds represent the cosmos according to Shingon esoteric Buddhism and are based on originals brought to Japan from Tang China by Kōbō Daishi, Kukai, in the early Heian period. These works with their refined forms and elegant colors, ornamental flecks of gold and silver foil and intricate cut-gold, kirikane, preserve the style of the late-Heian period.
