This illustrated handscroll depicts the protections of the wisdom king Fudō Myōō (Skt. Acala). The priest Chikō (dates unknown) of Miidera Temple in Shiga became gravely ill, and his disciple Shōkū (dates unknown) took on the illness in his place. Shōkū had offered daily rites to an icon painting of Fudō Myōō, and when he was on the verge of death, the deity was moved to pity and took on Shōkū’s plight, allowing Shōkū to recover.
