Based on iconography imported from Song-dynasty China, this image depicts a youthful Monju bosatsu, bodhisattva Mañjuśrī, with its hair tied into five knots, holding a sutra scroll and a lotus blossom. Monju is seated on the back of a lion, accompanied by Zenzai Dōji (Skt. Sudhana) and Uden'ō (the king of Khotan). This painting, from Chōkyū-ji Temple in Nara, originated from faith in Monju who is associated with Mt. Wutai in China.
