Here, a disheveled-hair Monju Bosatsu (Skt. Manjusri) holds a priest’s scepter while seated upon the back of a prostrate lion. The strong use of the brush makes the lines a prominent feature of the painting, while thinned ink is used to produce gradation and red is applied in certain places. The inscriber of the image, Muin Genkai (d. 1358) went to Yuan dynasty China to study under Zhongfeng Mingben (Jp. Chūhō Minpon, 1263-1323) and then returned to Japan.
