The monk Kanjin, from Kajū-ji temple in Kyoto, was appointed abbot of Tōdai-ji temple located in Nara in 1147 (Kyūan 3) during the Heian period. He organized the temple's documents and created a catalogue recording them. These he kept in five chests.This chest, newly created in the Kamakura period, borrows from that tradition and also held documents.The word kugen refers to official certificates.
