This is a study of the famed “Standing Kichijō-ten,”a celebrated sculpture from the early Kamakuraperiod owned by Jōruriji temple in Kyoto. This is the same image shown in May 1895 at the Exhibitionof Works from Various Historical Periods of the Fourth National Exposition for the Promotion of Industry. Yokoyama Taikan painted it when he was an instructor in the preparatory course of the KyotoSchool of Art and Crafts.
