Gyōyō are the ornamental metal fittings that hang pendent from the straps affixed to horses. This one features a pair of phoenixes facing one another done in openwork that is set into a gilt bronze backing. The other piece is a kagami-ita; it is one of the decorative metal fittings attached to the bit put in a horse’s mouth. An openwork floral arabesque motif (karakusamon) featuring honeysuckle is set at the center of a mirror-like backing. The motifs perhaps reflect the cultural influence of China during the Six Dynasties (220–589); they represent the great heights achieved in Kofun-period metalwork.
