Japanese archaeologists thought the rectangular divisions adorning these types of bells resembled those of Buddhist vestments. Thus these objects came to be referred to as “bells with the pattern of a monk’s robe.” This bell shares traits with others found across west-central Japan, particularly in the pair of spiral decorations at the top of its flange and the hatched lines within its rectangular compartments. The bell was found unexpectedly near the summit of a mountain.
