The bodhisattva Fugen sits in meditation, its solemn features and peak-like folds of the robes carved in a shallow mode characterizing a mid-Heian sculptural style. Remarkably, its hands and the heavenly scarves that float down from the shoulders over the arms and down to the legs are original to the statue, carved from the same block of wood as the head and the body. The pigments remaining on the crown date to the time of the statue’s production. The statue comes from Yoshino in Nara.
