In this work, the buddha Amida and twenty-five bodhisattvas descend to meet a dying believer who will soon be reborn in the Western Paradise, the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. The painting’s iconography is attributed to the monk Genshin (942–1017), an influential figure in the rise of Pure Land Buddhism during the Heian period (794–1185).
