This is an early copy of the oldest extant collection of Buddhist iconography in Japan, the ten scrolls known both as the Jikkanshō and the Zuzōsho. The original collection was compiled late in the Heian period (794–1185), and this copy can be traced back to the middle of the Kamakura period (1185–1333). Testament to its importance, it entered the collection of the famous scholar-monk Gōbō (1306–1362), founder of the Kanchi’in sub-temple at Tōji.
