Kōjō was a disciple of Kōkei Shōnin, the monk who devoted all his energies to restoring the precincts of Tōdai-ji during the early portion of the Edo period. After his mentor died without fully completed the task of restoration, Kōjō followed in Kōkei’s foot-steps, leading the way to the completion of the Hall of the Great Buddha (Daibutsuden). This letter, written by Kōjō, is addressed to the abbot of Enshō-ji, an elite temple located in Nara.
