This is the Kegon kyō thought to be used during the Jitchūki at the Nigatsudō at Tōdaiji during the period of Shuni-e rites. The Nigatsudō was destroyed by fire in the Edo period, and since this scroll was discovered among the burnt ruins of the structure it is called the "Nigatsudō yake kyō." It is highly valued as the only remaining Nara-period sutra written with silver ink on indigo-dyed paper.
