This engi (an account of karmic origins) recounts the passage of events in the rebuilding the temple from the time of the burning of Tōdai-ji at the beginning of the Kamakura period until its final restoration. It quotes passages from earlier sources such as the Tōdaiji yōroku (Essential records of Tōdai-ji) and the Tōdaiji Daibutsu kuyō ki (Record of thededication of the Great Buddha of Tōdai-ji). This work is sometimes called Shōhon Tōdaiji yōroku(Excerpts from the essential records of Tōdai-ji).
