This sutra, whose title has been translated as theSutra on the Tathāgata's Inconceivable State, is one scroll from a set of thousands that comprisethe Buddhist canon that is known as the Chūsonji kyō (the sutras of Chūson-ji temple). The copying of the scriptures, which was begun in 1117 (Eikyū 5) and lasted years, was sponsored by Fujiwarano Kiyohira. The illustration in silver and gold ink on the frontispiece depicts the historical Buddha, Śākyamuni, preaching the dharma. The text of the sutra is rendered in alternating lines of silver and gold ink.
