This is a reproduction of the 12th century Gaki zōshi (National Treasure, Tokyo National Museum), which depicts the realm of the hungry ghosts (or gaki). This is a realm reserved for people who committed evil acts during their lifetime. It has been faithfully copied with close observation of the original version, even features such as the peeling pigments and distressed paper. This is thought to be a work by the 19th century Yamato-e revivalist painter.
