These sketches are by Kano Tan'yū(1602-1674),who founded the Kano School of painting in the Edo period. Tan'yū was often required to authenticate old paintings, and he made thousands of sketches as records of famous paintings he had examined. They are accompanied by dates and notes and were organized and compiled into albums after his death. This album contains his sketches of Buddhist paintings.
