This sutra expounds reverence for Jizō bosatsu, the Japanese name of the bodhisattva Kṣitigarbha. The fluid calligraphy conveys a sense of the sutra-copying style of the Nara period. The vermilion imprint of the rectangular seal, which reads "Iwashimizu Jingūji Daijō Ritsu-in jōjū" (Resident of the Daijō Ritsu-in cloister of the shrine-temple at Iwshimizu), confirms that this sutra had been preserved at the Buddhist temple associated with the Iwashimizu Hachiman-gū shrine in Kyoto.
