This Buddhist iconographical compilation, edited in the late Heian period (794-1185), is the oldest in Japan. The collection of the Sanskrit names, seed syllables and samayagyō (symbolic forms) of eachdeity graphically depicts the content of sūtras andritual manuals. It influenced later iconographical compilations such as Besson zakki and Kakuzen-shō. This particular copy was in the collection of Gōbō, the first head priest of Kanchi-in at Tō-ji Temple in Kyoto Prefecture.
