This is a commentary by Ketang Shihui (1102–1166), a Chinese priest of the Southern Song dynasty (1127–1279), on a sectarian account of the Huayan (J. Kegon) Sect: the “Treatise on the Five Teachings.” The commentary is known as the “Funshin” in Japan, or “Burning Kindling.” This is a woodblock-printed edition that was likely produced by one of his disciples in 1198 (Qingyuan 4). It was brought to this country soon after its printing, entering the collection of Kōsan-ji Temple during the Kamakura period (1185–1333).
