This is part of a text transmitting the teachings of the so-called Tachikawa lineage of the Shingon sect, which was known for its black magic practices and the occult, sexual elements to its traditions. Recent scholarship suggests this lineage may or may not have actually existed as such; rather, apocryphal teachings and ideas were gathered and ascribed to a constructed “Tachikawa lineage” that was nevertheless important in medieval Buddhism as the embodiment of all Shingon heresies.
