This hanging votive image (Jpn. kakebotoke) depicts the original Buddhist forms (honji) of the twelve deities of the Kumano Sanzan (three shrines) in Wakayama Prefecture. In the center is a relatively large image of Amida (Skt. Amitābha), the original Buddhist form of the deity of the Hongū, the main shrine of Kumano. Among the twelve deities, who are arranged in three rows that nearly form a circle, is an abbreviated image of the Jūichimen Kannon (Eleven-headed Avalokiteśvara, Skt. Ekadaśamukha), the original form of the deity of Wakamiya Shrine.
