Depicted here are the Ten Kings who determine the fates of the deceased traveling through the ten stages of transmigration that occur on special mourning days at seven-day intervals after death, culminating on the 49th day, and then again occurring on the 100th day, as well as the first and third anniversary. The kings are paired with the ten buddhas and bodhisattvas who are their original Buddhist forms. This is one of the earlier examples of this type of iconography.
