This scroll is a remnant of a set of the entire Buddhist canon sponsored by Empress Kōmyō for her late parents. The set, which would have been made up of thousands of scrolls, is known as the Sutras of the First Day of the 5th Month. Approximately one thousand scrolls from the set are extant. The stately calligraphy is representative of that used for sutras of the Nara period.
