These types of pots were used for storing or cooking food. The distinct cylindrical shape seen in this one dates to the Early to Middle Jōmon period and is unique to those found in the northern part of the Tohoku region. The potter pressed twisted cords into the surface of the pot to create its densely-packed patterning and decorated the rim with bands in different designs.
