The large figure of Avalokitêśvara is painted seated on a rock by the shore. The child-like figure approaching in the lower left of the painting is the youth Sudhana. Avalokitêśvara’s ample body and the delicate gold patterns on his robes are characteristic of Goryeo Buddhist painting. The inclusionof a Buddha on a cloud at the top of the painting, perhaps Amitābha in a provisional form, is unusual.
