Of ten Jūgyūzu (series of ten images in Zen iconography that use the herding of an ox as a metaphor for Zen practice), this one, the fifth in the series, is all the remains. Records indicate that the inscription at the top of the painting was written in 1301 (Enkei 3) by the Chinese Yuan dynasty monk Yishan Yining (Jp. Issan Ichinei). Among Japanese Zen temples, this is considered a valuable work of early ink painting.
