With the exception of the hands and toes, this work has been carved from a single block of solid wood that had not been hollowed. While it evokes a sense of volume, the shallow carving of the facial features and oval well-rounded face display the style of the transitional stage from the middle to late Heian period. The identity of this divinity is unclear because the identifying attributes that would have been held in its hands are missing.
