This scroll is one of the 600 fascicles of the Great Wisdom Sutra that was donated to the Chinju Hachimangū, the shrine of the deity Hachiman who protects the Tōdaiji temple. It was copied according to the wishes of the Buddhist nun Jōa whose prayers were for the peace and tranquility of the temple precincts. The task of copying the sutra was shared by the monks of Tōdaiji. The impression of a seal reading “Tōdaiji/Hachimangū” is found on the back of the paper.
