This eaves tile has a lotus flower motif featuring petals done in a stylized mode. The eight petals end in triangular points and they are articulated by straight lines. The tile appears to descend from those produced in the Baekje kingdom (first half of 4th c.–680 CE) on the Korean peninsula, but it is somewhat more geometric and abstracted than Korean examples. Yokoihaiji is an abandoned temple located on a hilltop in the eastern part of the Nara basin; many ancient eaves tiles and decorative tiles have been collected from the site.
