This is the biography of the Tendai monk Jōzō (891-964), a son of Miyoshi no Kiyoyuki. The biography chiefly records various wondrous deeds performed by Jōzō, who had undergone spiritual training in the mountains of Kumano and Ōminesan. Among these was the miraculous result of the esoteric-Buddhist Daiitoku rite that he conducted to subdue the rebel Taira no Masakado.
