The 70th Annual Exhibition of Shōsō-in Treasures

The Shōsō-in exhibition, a regular feature of Nara autumns, greets its seventieth season this year. Fifty-six treasures will be on display: ten items from the North Section, sixteen from the Middle Section, twenty-seven from the South Section and three from the Shōgozō archives. Among them, ten include items have never been exhibited previously.
Beautifully crafted pieces dazzle the eyes with their unstinting use of precious materials and mastery of a myriad refined techniques. This year these include an Eight-Lobed Mirror Decorated with Mother-of-Pearl on the Back that once belonged to Emperor Shōmu, an Offering Box with Marquetry, Gold Painting on Aloeswood and Colored Paintings, an Octagonal Box Decorated with Tortoiseshell and Mother-of-Pearl, and a Rhinoceros Horn Nyoi (Buddhist Priest’s Scepter).
In contrast to these luxury items are those made from bast fibers, like hemp. These materials that are integral to our daily life even now had a wide range of uses in the ancient times and counted among the items supplied the central government as tax from the provinces. Based on special research conducted between 2013 and 2015 by the Imperial Culture Agency’s Office of the Shōsō-in, this year presents treasures that employ these bast fibers in a variety of ways. Please imagine a cultural history where people and bast fibers interlace.
In addition this year, numerous items related to the Korean Kingdom of Silla that date from the same time as the Shōsō-in treasures will be on display. These provide an opportunity to direct attention to the span of international connections Japan enjoyed during the Nara period, not limited to exchange with Tang China.
Here in Nara where the treasures have been passed down, please enjoy this Shōsō-in exhibition that reflects various findings from recent years.
