Special Exhibition of

The National Treasure Illustrated Scrolls of the Legends of Shigisan:
Treasures of Chōgosonshiji Temple and Faith in Bishamontennō

Shigisan Chōgosonshiji Temple is located on ground sacred to Bishamontennō, and the temple is said to have been built by Shōtoku Taishi. The National Treasure Illustrated Scrolls of the Legends of Shigisan, created in this spiritual milieu, is counted as one the three greatest illustrated scrolls in Japan. This set of scrolls is also recognized as a masterpiece of Heian-era painting. This exhibition is the first time in history that every scene from the three scrolls of this fascinating National Treasure will be on display throughout the duration of an exhibition. In addition, through the display of various treasures preserved at Chōgosonshiji, visitors will be able to feel the impact of the charm of the visual and plastic arts that were born out of faith in Shigisan’s Bishamontennō.
